3. Abstract
Before-class reading preparation in other studies, known as pre-reading, is not only
reading beforehand but also an activity involving study before class. This habit gives confidence and readiness for students when they start class. With a well-prepared behavior, reading before class enhances student academic performance and learning achievement. In this sense, determinants of pre-reading should be taken into account to develop the culture of pre-reading and enhance the academic performance of students. This study aims to investigate determinants of pre-reading. In the form of quantitative study, questionnaire is used to collect data, and a multi-regression model is carried out to test predictors: gender, school discipline, individual interest, and family financial status. Through data analysis, only two predictive variables—school discipline and individual interest—are supported. In the field of education, knowing determinants of pre-reading is very essential to develop pre-reading culture as well as to enhance the academic achievement of students.
